Are you a foreigner living in Korea or a Korean national residing abroad? If so, you may have heard about the recent changes to Korea’s health insurance system. Starting in April 2024, the eligibility criteria for health insurance are set to change, and it’s essential to stay informed and prepared.

New Health Insurance Criteria for Foreign Residents and Overseas Koreans

Health Insurance Eligibility and Dependent Enrollment Criteria for Foreign Residents in Korea

Beginning in April 2024, foreign residents and overseas Koreans entering Korea must reside in the country for at least six months to register as dependents under the employer-based health insurance system. This change stems from the revised National Health Insurance Act announced by the National Health Insurance Service. With this update, you no longer need to worry about being unprepared when health issues or medical treatments arise.

The six-month residency requirement aims to prevent cases where individuals temporarily enter Korea solely to receive medical benefits and then leave. According to the National Health Insurance Service, this update is part of a broader effort to establish a more robust and equitable system. The goal is to ensure that all members of society benefit fairly from healthcare services, enhancing trust and balance within the community.

Stricter Dependent Enrollment Rules and Visa Types

A significant highlight of the amendment is the stricter eligibility criteria for dependents. Previously, meeting simple income and property requirements or proving a relationship with an employee was sufficient. Now, residency duration has also become a key factor. In simpler terms, dependents like parents or spouses can only receive health insurance benefits if they consistently live in Korea with the primary policyholder, who holds a valid work visa.

Thankfully, there are exceptions! For example, minors under 19 or spouses can gain immediate coverage upon application. Additionally, specific visa holders are eligible for immediate enrollment, including:

  • D-2 (Student Visa)
  • D-4-3 (Elementary, Middle, High School Trainee)
  • E-9 (Non-Professional Employment)
  • F-5 (Permanent Resident)
  • F-6 (Marriage Immigrant)

These provisions ensure that individuals with established ties or permanent residency in Korea can still access health insurance without delay.

In conclusion, this amendment encourages responsible use of health insurance and promotes fairness in access to medical benefits. Be sure to review your specific situation and prepare accordingly to enjoy a stable and worry-free life in Korea. If you have any questions or uncertainties, don’t hesitate to contact the relevant authorities for clear and accurate information! ????
